Ruby J. Becker

May 9, 1940 — May 22, 2025

Galva, KS

Ruby J. Becker, 85, formerly of Galva and McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025, with family by her side at Pine Village, Moundridge.

She was born May 9, 1940, in McPherson County, KS, the daughter of Peter J.P. Schrag, Sr. and Esther (Schrag) Schrag. Ruby grew up and was baptized in the Hopefield Mennonite Church in rural Moundridge. She later was a member of the First Mennonite Church in McPherson. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1958. On March 11, 1960, Ruby was united in marriage to Merle Dean Becker in Moundridge. This union was blessed with two children, Gene and Cheryl.

Ruby worked for the Canton-Galva schools as an executive assistant to the superintendent.

Ruby was a woman of many talents and deep warmth. She found joy in quilting, baking cookies and bread, and tending to her garden. Her frequent and extended phone conversations with family, especially her sisters, were a source of happiness and connection. Ruby also loved music; she sang with a joyful heart and played the piano with grace. Even after enduring physical challenges following a vehicle accident, she maintained a remarkably positive outlook on life. Rarely did she speak a harsh word about anyone or anything. Loving, caring, and endlessly hospitable, Ruby welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and an open heart.

She is survived by a son, Gene (Brenda) Becker; daughter, Cheryl Schmidt of McPherson, KS; grandchildren, Tyler Becker, Paige (Matthew) Burdick, and Madison Schmidt; brothers, Mervin (Shirley) Schrag of Hesston, KS and Harold “Harry” (Sandy) Schrag of Springfield, MO; sister, Lois (Michael) Cunningham of McPherson, KS; and many extended relatives and friends.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Terry Schmidt; siblings, Peter Schrag, Jr., Elmer Schrag, Evie Stucky, Marie Krehbiel, Ruth Krehbiel, Reuben Schrag, and Mildred “Millie” Stucky.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the First Mennonite Church, McPherson with Pastor Lynn Schlosser officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM, Thursday, until service time at the church. Burial will follow the service at McPherson Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be given to Pine Village or First Mennonite Church in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
