Katherine Rae Braden, 84, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 21, 2026, with grace and quiet strength. Born on February 17, 1942, in a small farmhouse near Thayer, Kansas, to Truman and Elizabeth Cooper, she learned early the values of hard work, faith, and caring for others.
Katherine married her high school sweetheart, Gary Braden, raised two sons, and together they built a loving home and family. She was known for her warm smile, gentle laugh, and thoughtful nature. A devoted record keeper, Katherine never forgot birthdays or important moments and was well known for her handwritten letters, thank‑you notes, and words of comfort.
Her kindness extended beyond her own family. She cared for neighborhood children, ensuring they were fed and clothed when needed, and opened her home to many. Her kitchen table was a place of welcome, conversation, and homemade treats.
Katherine was preceded in death by both parents, her husband Gary Braden, and her older brother Gary Cooper. She is survived by: son Jeff Braden, wife Jennifer, and grandson Josh; son Jim Braden, wife Natalie, and their three children and three grandchildren; sister‑in‑law Stephanie Cooper; and many dear friends.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM, Sunday, April 26, 2026, at Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 pm (noon) on Monday, April 27, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Wichita.
Memorial donations can be payable to the Cat House or to MCCF (McPherson County Community Foundation) which will be used to expand the fencing and play area for the shelter dogs at the McPherson Animal Shelter in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
