Jonas “Joe” B. Unruh, 92, of McPherson, Kansas, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, surrounded by family at his home.
Joe was born on April 28, 1934, in Hillsboro, Kansas, the son of John F. and Bertha (Webster) Unruh. He attended Lehigh Elementary School and graduated from Lehigh Rural High School in 1952. He received a basketball scholarship to attend McPherson College, but left after one semester due to a family illness. On March 11, 1962, Joe was united in marriage to Frances “Fran” Lorrine Klassen, at the Inman Mennonite Church, Inman, Kansas.
Joe served in the United States Navy from 1954 through 1958 and was a member of the McPherson American Legion. He was a member of Countryside Covenant Church, McPherson.
He retired from NCRA Refinery where he worked in the Alkylation Unit.
Joe had a deep appreciation for all kinds of music throughout his life, having been raised in a talented musical family. His mother taught piano, while his father taught violin, creating a home filled with music and inspiration. Carrying on that musical tradition, Joe taught himself to play the dobro.
An avid golfer, Joe enjoyed both playing the game and following it as a spectator. He also treasured the countless memories made with his family at Table Rock Lake, where camping trips in the RV became a cherished tradition.
Above all, Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always encouraging and supporting them in all of their pursuits. He took great pride in caring for his home, especially his lawn, which he meticulously maintained and continued mowing until just a few months before his passing.
Joe was truly a people person with a warm and welcoming spirit. He never met a stranger and genuinely enjoyed visiting with others, hearing their stories, and forming lasting friendships. His kindness and love for family and friends will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Surviving members of the family include his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Unruh of the home; a son, Brian J. Unruh and wife, Amy, of Wichita, Kansas; granddaughters, Briane, Rachel, and Erica Unruh of Wichita, KS; and other extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elman, Louis, and Harold Unruh; and sisters, Clarice Haefner, Erma Holley, and Doris Farmer.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 9:30 AM, Friday, June 26, 2026, at the McPherson Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM, Friday, at Countryside Covenant Church with Rev. Jon Black officiating.
Memorial donations can be payable to the Kansas Honor Flight or Countryside Covenant Church in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
