Howard B. Overton

Howard Benjamin Overton, 86, went to be with his friend and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Howard was born on February 14, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Howard Maynard and Irene Margaret (Shelton) Overton. He graduated from Campbell Union High School in California in 1958 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from San Jose State University in 1967. Howard served in the United States Navy from April 1959 until January 1963.

While living in San Jose, California, Howard met the love of his life, Suszann Holmes. The two were united in marriage on April 10, 1965, in Santa Cruz, California. They were married for 55 years prior to Suszann's passing on October 20, 2020.

Howard dedicated 30 years of his career to serving as a Park Ranger with the U.S. National Park Service, retiring at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, California. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where his faith and relationship with Jesus Christ were an important part of his life.

Howard will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Julie Overton (Trundy) of Fairfield, CA, Christa Overton of San Diego, CA, Howard “Howie” Overton (Susan) of St. Anthony, ID, and David Overton (Morgan Meyer) of Alvin, TX; seven grandchildren, Maci, Alexa, Hadley, Clayton, Ezra, Silas, and Asa; and siblings, Sharon Gifford and Margo Olinger, both of northern California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Suszann.

A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Crestwood Memorial Park, McPherson, with Dr. Matthew Perry officiating.
