Gary D. Latimer, 95, formerly of Derby, KS and Haysville, KS, peacefully passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026, surrounded by family at his home in McPherson, KS.
Gary was born on September 26, 1931, in Coffeyville, Kansas, the son of Glen A. and Grace M. (McClatchey) Latimer. He graduated from Field Kinley High School in Coffeyville in 1949. That same year, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve, proudly serving from April 1949 until his honorable discharge in June 1953. Gary continued his education at Wichita State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, before pursuing graduate studies at Kansas State University. He went on to receive both his master’s degree and Education Specialist degree from Kansas State, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and education.
On June 24, 1951, Gary was united in marriage to Jean Fahler in Edna, KS. This union was blessed with three children, Kathryn, Linda, and Kent. Jean passed away on August 31, 2024, following 73 years of marriage.
Gary retired in Wichita, KS from a long and fulfilling career as a science teacher. He was a longtime member of Haysville United Methodist Church and, after moving to McPherson, attended First Presbyterian Church. His faith and commitment to his church communities were an important part of his life.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Williams of Topeka, KS; son, Kent Latimer of McPherson, KS; a sister, Carole Irelan of Marionville, MO; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Fr. Boyd Curtis Latimer; sister, Sandra Kay Knight; and daughter, Linda.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1400 N. Main, McPherson, KS 67460 with Rev. David Kincaide officiating. Inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery, Haysville, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Boy Scout Troop #130 in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
