David Milton Smith, 77, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Salina Regional Health Center.
Dave was born February 7, 1948, in Denver, CO, the son of Albert Milton and Ila Rae “Pat” (Vernon) Smith. Dave attended Alameda High School in Lakewood, CO, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam War.
On November 21, 1969, he was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Fisher. Together they shared 55 years of love, laughter, and partnership.
Dave began his career with Union Pacific Railroad in 1970, serving as an engineer and train master until his retirement in 2008. Following retirement, he continued to serve his community as the dedicated lounge manager for V.F.W. Post #2715, where he was a life member.
He was known for his steadfast work ethic, quick wit, and the enjoyment he found in spending winters in Texas among friends.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara of the home; a son, James “Jimmy” Smith of McPherson, KS; a sister, Pauline Bradbury of Surprise, AZ; and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jack and Larry Smith.
A Celebration of Life with Military Honors will be held at a later date at V.F.W. Post #2715.
