Pearl A. Sandahl

Pearl Annabell Sandahl was born in McPherson on April 6, 1925, the first child of Mabel (Ledell) and C. Hugo Sandahl. Pearl was raised on Summerdale Dairy Farm northwest of McPherson with her two brothers, Virgil and Harry, and Uncle Verner. Pearl died at Bethany Home on August 23, 2015. All her immediate family has preceded her in death. Many relatives survive.

Pearl attended a one room school, Hedley Grade School, in Harper Township. She graduated from Marquette High School. Pearl earned a teaching certificate and bachelor’s degree from Bethany College in Lindsborg.

Pearl was a retired high school English teacher and drama coach. Her first teaching assignment was in a one room school, Sharps Creek Grade School, in 1944. Pearl's teaching career continued in western Kansas, Moundridge and finally settling at Marquette until her retirement.

Pearl was a devoted daughter, sister and niece to her family. She is likely to be remembered most for the dedication and care she gave to her father, uncle, and two brothers.

Pearl loved poetry and taught many students how to properly construct prose. She wrote many works of her own and had several published. Pearl is also remembered for her handwork, particularly her cross stitch creations. Many of her works adorned the walls of her home and room at Bethany Home. Pearl enjoyed cooking and was instrumental in collecting Ledell family recipes. She had them printed in a family cookbook entitled “Homestyle Heritage” in 1975. She was the Ledell family historian for many years and wrote the first history that continues being used today.

Pearl was a member of Freemount Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed, and was a member to the women's groups of the church. She belonged to active and retired educators’ associations.

The funeral service will be held at 9:30 AM, Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Freemount Lutheran Church. Burial will precede the service at 9:00 AM at Freemount Lutheran Church Cemetery. A memorial fellowship coffee will be held at Bethany Home activity center after the service.
