Gerald A. Neher

Gerald A. Neher, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2015, at The Cedars, McPherson. He was a loan supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration, served as a Church of the Brethren missionary in Nigeria from 1954 to 1968, and was co-author, along with his wife, of three books about Nigeria.

Gerald was born on October 5, 1930, in Quinter, KS, the son of Roy Herbert and Wava Marie (Long) Neher. On December 23, 1952, Gerald was united in marriage to Lois Ruth Yoder in Pampa, TX. He graduated from McPherson College in 1952, received his Master’s Degree from Cornell University, and attended Bethany Theological Seminary.

He was a member of McPherson Church of the Brethren and, before moving to McPherson in 2008, was a member of the United Methodist Churches in Anna and Carbondale, Illinois. He also was a member of the Simmental Cattle Association, Appaloosa Horse Club, and American Kennel Club. He and his wife also hosted numerous foreign exchange students.

Survivors include: wife, Lois of the home; children, Rodney Neher (Mary) of Janesville, WI, Karen Neher of Miami, FL, Bryce Neher (Melissa) of Udell, IA, and Connie Weesner (Bill) of Hutchinson, KS; brothers Dean Neher of Bridgewater, VA, Lyle Neher (Marlene) of Grundy Center, IA, and Doyle Neher (Sharon) of Hutchinson, KS; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 30, 2015, at McPherson Church of the Brethren with Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
