Fern L. Davis

Fern Davis was born on November 1, 1915, in Piedmont, Oklahoma. She peacefully passed away in McPherson, Kansas, on Sunday, March 8, 2015.

Fern's parents were the Rev. E. Clyde Smith and Blanche (Gill) Smith. Rev. Smith was a Free Methodist minister, and Fern was an active member of the Free Methodist Church in Oklahoma, Iowa, Colorado, and Kansas. She was always musically gifted and directed adult and children's choirs throughout the years. She loved to sing in ladies trios.

Fern graduated from Central Academy in McPherson and then completed two years at a junior college in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

She married John Hart of Geary, Oklahoma in 1934. They were blessed with a son, John Edward Hart. Fern's husband, John Hart, passed on July 7, 1937, at a young age.

She later married Preston Thomas Mayse, and they had two sons, Preston Thomas Mayse, Jr. and Jimmy Lee Mayse. The family moved from Bethany, Oklahoma to Des Moines, Iowa, where Fern became city manager for Avon Products. After years of faithful service, Fern retired, and she and Preston moved to Cañon City, Colorado where they purchased Fern's parents' home. Preston passed away on September 23, 1983.

Fern remained in Cañon City working in the local church and enjoying TOPS Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. After several years, she married Charlie Davis of Canon City. They were happy together, but Charlie passed away on October 7, 1995. Fern moved from Cañon City in 1997 to McPherson, Kansas where her son, Tom, and his family reside.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Elwin and Paul Wesley, a younger sister, Flossie, and her three husbands, John, Preston, and Charlie.

Survivors include her three sons, John (Kathie) Hart of Houston, Texas, Tom (Karen) Mayse of McPherson, Kansas, and Jim (Verla) Mayse of Clive, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 12, 2015, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Stockham Family Funeral Home, with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

The funeral service will be Friday, March 13, at 10:30 AM at the McPherson Free Methodist Church, under the direction of Pastor Deborah Somerville.

Interment will be at the Mountain Vale Memorial Park in Cañon City, Colorado on Saturday, March 14, at 10:00 AM.
