Donald Widrig

Donald N. Widrig, 70, of McPherson, died Wednesday, June 30, at Memorial Hospital in McPherson. He had been a McPherson resident since 1955.

Don was born June 27, 1934, in Beloit Kansas, where he spent his childhood playing sports and working on the family farm. After attending KU on a track scholarship, Don spent two years overseas in the Army, before returning to McPherson College to finish his degree.

He stayed on after graduation and eventually became head basketball coach, a position he held for 13 years. He spent the rest of his career as an oil lease owner/operator in Central Kansas.

On August 31, 1957, he was united in marriage to H. June McDaniel in McPherson.

Don was active in the community and over the years served as President of the Kiwanis Club, the Country Club, Board Member at both the First United Methodist Church and Memorial Hospital and he most recently served on the committee to plan the McPherson Water Park. Don enjoyed all sports, especially golf, and was a long time booster of both the Bullpups and Bulldogs. The lack of his booming "suggestions" from the stands will leave the Roundhouse a quieter place.

Survivors include: his wife June of the home; his sons Greg and wife, Laurie, of Leawood, KS and Michael and wife, Jackie, of Bedford, NH; three sisters, Carol Jean Wessling of Hagatna, Guam, Peg Gwin of Beloit, KS, and Janet DuBois of Salina, KS; and seven grandchildren, Ryan, Michael, Danny, Paige, Ethan, Rachel, and Bridget. He was preceded in death by a brother, James.

The memorial service will be at 1:30 PM, Friday, July 2, at the First United Methodist Church. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to First United Methodist Church or McPherson Healthcare Foundation in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home.
