Carolyn M. Walker

Carolyn M. Walker went home to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020 at the age of 89. The celebration of her life will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at the graveside, McPherson Cemetery. Her pastor, Rev. Lynn Scott, will officiate. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to noon (also on Friday) at the First Christian Church, 101 S. Walnut, in McPherson.

Born on Sept. 7, 1931 in rural McPherson, KS, Carolyn’s parents were Henry Adams Walker and Mildred Lucretia Russell Walker. With her family she attended Groveland Christian Church and later in life was a member of the First Christian Church, McPherson. She was educated at the Groveland Center School and graduated from McPherson High School. She trained as a nurse assistant and this became her career for 43 years. She lived in McPherson her entire life.

Carolyn’s top priorities were taking care of her family, serving her friends and church family, and working on the baby floor of Memorial Hospital. She was independent and lived in her own home all her 89 years. Her nephews and nieces helped her when the need arose. Carolyn was ‘green’ before recycling was invented. Being a child of the depression, nothing was ever wasted, and all was either given to charity or reused if possible. Her voice could be heard on Swap Shop consistently offering the simplest of items rather than toss them in the trash. Carolyn loved tracking her genealogy and was a proud member of the D.A.R. She wrote many letters to friends scattered all over the United States. Her candies, cheese balls and treats showed up at every bake sale in town. Her last offering of peanut clusters did not make it to the bake sale, it was purchased by her nephew doing the sale delivery. Many were touched by this simple life lived cheerfully and simply.

Carolyn was proceeded in death by her parents, her brothers, James, Winston and Kenneth, her sisters, Eloise Thomas and Adelaide McBride, her nephews, Larry and Bill Walker, and niece Barbara Estrada.

Those who mourn her passing but celebrate her home going are nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and great-great nieces. Carolyn sent many birthday and congratulatory cards to her family, and these will be missed. In recent years new babies all received a bear made by a church friend. She is also survived by many friends that were her lifeline in her last years. Her one regret this year was not being able to attend her 70th class reunion at McPherson High because of flu restrictions.

Carolyn will be dearly missed by family, friends, church, and community.
