Vera Fields

Vera E. Fields, 94, of McPherson, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2008, at The Cedars, McPherson. Vera was born on November 16, 1913, in Dickinson County, Kansas, the daughter of Parkhurst James and Sadie (Pomeroy) Postlewait. She graduated from Minneapolis (KS) High School in 1932. She received an Associate Degree from Central College in McPherson.

On June 5, 1939, Vera was united in marriage to Russell Oren Fields in Iola, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1971. She was a farm wife, taught school in southeast Kansas, worked as a proof reader for the Ulysses Daily News, and worked as a sales clerk for the Babyland store in McPherson.

Vera attended the Church of God in Ulysses, Kansas, was a member of the McPherson Free Methodist Church, served as a 4-H Leader in Grant County, KS, taught piano lessons, and was a member of the Cimarron H.D.U. in Grant County, KS.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at the Free Methodist Church, McPherson with Rev. Deb Somerville & Rev. Tom Griffith officiating. Graveside service will be on Monday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 PM at the Ulysses Cemetery, Ulysses, KS. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, Sunday, Sept. 14, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.

Survivors include: son, Merlin Fields and wife, Marilyn, of McPherson, KS; daughter, Carolyn Hawkins and husband, James, of Kansas City, KS; daughter-in-law, Gail Fields of Ft. Worth, TX; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Russell Oren Fields, a son, Charles R. Fields, and four sisters and two brothers.
