Stephen Eli "Steve" Nutter, 87, of Inman, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at Pleasant View Home in Inman.

He was one of ten children, with eight brothers and one sister, born on February 17, 1920, in West Union, West Virginia, to Chester and Gatha Nutter. His father worked in the oil fields and moved the family to Kansas in 1929. Steve completed the eighth grade in McPherson, leaving school to help take care of his brothers and sisters, following the death of his mother in 1938.

In World War Two, Steve was in the first group of men to leave from McPherson County in February, 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps as an auto mechanic until 1946.

Stephen married Polly "Teague" Nutter of Galva, Kansas, on Easter Sunday of 1946 in Wichita. The couple moved to Wyoming in 1951, where he worked in the oilfields and later as a diesel mechanic. Upon the death of his wife in 2004, he returned to Kansas and has resided at the Pleasant View Home in Inman.

Steve and Polly loved fishing, prospecting for gold, and enjoyed exploring the mountains of the West. One of the highlights of their life together was an extended trip to Canada and Alaska in 1986 with two of his brothers and their wives.

Stephen is survived by his son, David Nutter, Casper, Wyoming; three bothers, Roland "Blackie" Nutter, Pryor Oklahoma, James Nutter, McPherson, Kansas, and Edward Nutter, Wichita, Kansas; one sister, Trudy Lingle, South Hutchinson, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held in the Chapel at Pleasant View Home at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 7, 2007. Inurnment will be at a later date in McPherson cemetery.
