Sarah Wava Nelson, 100, of McPherson and formerly of Culver, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 11, 2012, at McPherson Hospital. She was a homemaker.

Wava was born on July 2, 1911, in Osborne County, Kansas, the daughter of William Ira and Katie (Seaman) Wineland. She graduated from high school in Covert, Kansas and attended Fort Hays State College for 2 ½ years. After college, she taught school in Osborne County for two years. On April 21, 1935, Wava was united in marriage to Howard D. Nelson, in Covert, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1983.

She was a member of the Culver United Methodist Church, where she was involved with the WSCS (Women's Society of Christian Service), the HGL Club, and the SOS card group.

Survivors include: daughter, Janet J. Brown of McPherson, KS; son, Darrell D. Nelson (Saundra) of Cupertino, CA; four grandchildren, Diane Martin (C.D.) of McPherson, KS, Sharon Green (Kelly) of Brighton, CO, Mindy Huston (Peter) of Campbell, CA, and Darren Nelson of Cupertino, CA; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler Huston of Campbell, CA, Kelsie Martin of McPherson, KS, Kolby Martin of McPherson, KS, Matthew, Kaila, & David Green of Brighton, CO, and Aniko Nelson of Cupertino, CA; great-great-grandson, Layton Martin of McPherson, KS; brother-in-law, James Mikesell of Abilene, KS; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Lenita Medcraft and Margaret Naylor, and great-grandson, Pierce Huston.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 29, 2012, at 10:30 AM, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Marion officiating. Inurnment of cremains will take place prior to the memorial service at Crown Point Cemetery in rural Culver, KS.
