Kermit K. Hawley, 75, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. He retired after 42 years from the McPherson Post Office where he had worked as a carrier and window clerk.

Kermit was born on January 21, 1938, in McPherson, KS, the son of Clinton and Maxeline I. (Switzer) Hawley. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1956 and attended McPherson College. On December 31, 1981, Kermit was united in marriage to Susan M. (Harrison) Peterson in Hutchinson, KS.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a volunteer for the McPherson County Humane Society, where he served on the board for numerous years.

Kermit had volunteered for 50 years with the Kansas Babe Ruth Leagues. He had coached for nearly two decades for his hometown McPherson Elks Babe Ruth team and had coached several all-star teams. He also served on the local and State boards for Kansas Babe Ruth Leagues as Secretary/Treasurer for many years.

Survivors include: wife, Susan of the home; children, Kathy Morse of Independence, KS, Christine Roark of McPherson, KS, Sandy Lawless and husband, Henry, of Canton, KS; and Don Hawley Peterson and wife, Shari, of Houston, TX; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Carl John Lawless, and step-son, Robert Alan Peterson.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 19, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kate Johnson Martin officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460. A private burial will take place at a later date at the McPherson Cemetery.
