Dorothy May (Henkle) Pounds, 97, of McPherson, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She retired in 1979 after 42 years of teaching, having taught Kindergarten through 8th grade at McPherson and Barton County, ten years at McPherson High School, and then Junior High in Wichita.

Dorothy was born May 30, 1914, in Kay County, Oklahoma, the daughter of William H. and Myrtle (Mitcham) Henkle. She graduated from Central Academy, McPherson in 1931, Central College, McPherson in 1935, Seattle Pacific, WA with B. A. degree in 1946, and Wichita State University with M.A. degree in 1960.

She was united in marriage to Roger W. Pounds on May 3, 1986, in McPherson, KS. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2009.

Her memberships included the Free Methodist Church, where she played the organ and piano, Gideon Auxiliary, McPherson Association of Retired School Personnel (past President), the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel (past President), and Delta Kappa Gamma (past Treasurer).

Survivors include: step-daughters, Erma C. Dunham & husband, Calvin, of Russellville, AR and Elma M. Habecker & husband, Earl, of Spring Arbor, MI; nephews, Marvin Sellberg of McPherson, KS, James Henkle of New York, Richard Henkle of Garden City, KS, and Steven Henkle of Orange, CA; nieces, Joyce Boone of Garden City, KS and Kay Mylod of Huntington Beach, CA; great-nephews, Dr. Martin Sellberg of Wichita, KS and Gary Bricker of Wichita, KS; great-nieces, Marcia (Sellberg) Meyer of Paradise Valley, AZ and Marlene (Sellberg) Waltz of Kansas City, MO; eight step-grandchildren; and 19 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, and her husband.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, March 23, 2012, at the McPherson Free Methodist Church with Rev. Deborah Somerville & Rev. Tom Griffith officiating. Burial will be in the McPherson Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
